Last week, on one of the coldest days of the winter (so far), Emily and I did something many people might find surprising. We started our onions and leeks! Here's how it went:
We started with seeds, potting soil and some planting flats. The soil was spread out in flats and gently tamped down.
Next we made shallow furrows with our fingers and moistened the soil with a backpack sprayer.
Then we carefully put seeds in each furrow at a rate of around five seeds per inch.
Next we gently covered the seeds and watered them in.
Labels and other markers are important for keeping all your varieties straight.
Then just a few days ago we were rewarded with these little beauties! Spring is coming!
